    The College Admissions Problem Under Uncertainty

    We consider a college admissions problem with uncertainty. We realistically assume that (i) students' college application choices are nontrivial because applications are costly, (ii) college rankings of students are noisy and thus uncertain at the time of application, and (iii) matching between colleges and students takes place in a decentralized setting. We analyze a general equilibrium model where two ranked colleges set admissions standards for student quality signals, and students, knowing their types, decide where to apply to. We show that the optimal student application portfolio need not be monotone in types, and we construct a robust example to show that this can lead to a failure of assortative matching in equilibrium. More importantly, we prove that a unique equilibrium with assortive matching exists provided application costs are small and the lower-ranked college has sufficiently high capacity. We also provide equilibrium comparative static results with respect to college capacities and application costs.     Wage and Occupational Differences Between Black and White Men: Labor Market Discrimination in the Rural South

    The existence of labor market discrimination based on race is well established.However, study continues into a variety of aspects of discrimination-among them the extent to which it exists in different regions. Gwartney has estimated the ratio of black to white earnings to be between .83 and .88 for the North and between .68 and .74 for the South. Masters, in a study of earnings differentials between black and white men, found a ratio of .79 for the non-South and .69 for the South. Although considerable literature has developed concerning earnings differentials, wage discrimination in rural areas is one topic which has received relatively little attention. In an attempt to eliminate this oversight this paper concentrates on the extent of wage differences between black and white men in the rural South attributable to labor market discrimination

    T Tauri variability in the context of the beat-frequency model

    We examine the implications of a beat frequency modulated model of T Tauri accretion. In particular we show that measurements of the variability of accretion generated lines can be used in conjunction with existing photometry to obtain a measurement of the underlying photospheric and disc flux. This provides an independent way of checking spectral energy distribution modelling. In addition, we show how spectroscopy of T Tauri stars can reveal the inclination angle between the magnetic axis and the plane of the disc.Comment: uuencoded compressed postscript.     Building Middle-Level Mathematics Teachers\u27 Capacities as Teachers and Leaders: The Math in the Middle Institute Partnership

    This article describes professional development for middle-level mathematics teachers offered through the Math in the Middle Institute Partnership, a National Science Foundation-funded project to build teachersā€™ capacities to improve mathematics learning for all students. An overview of the project, including descriptions of its goals and curriculum are provided. Detailed descriptions of two mathematics courses and one pedagogy course are offered. The mathematics courses included here are the introductory course to the Math in the Middle Institute, as well as one of the ļ¬nal math courses of the Institute in which participants apply mathematical knowledge and processes to real-world problems. The pedagogy course features curriculum that enables teachers to acquire an understanding of the nature and purpose of action research, and launches teachers into planning and implementing systematic inquiry in their own mathematics classrooms around topics of their choosing. The varied abilities of teachers, as well as growth in teachersā€™ mathematical and pedagogical capacities, are represented by several samples of student work provided within the article. In addition, mathematical and pedagogical products of student work are also provided through the projectā€™s URL links. Improving teacher quality is identiļ¬ed as a national need in mathematics education and one many universities and schools across the country are working in partnership to try to address. This article describes a professional development project aimed at improving mathematics teaching and learning in the middle grades. An overview of the project, along with a close look at several of its course offerings, are presented highlighting mathematical and pedagogical goals, challenges, and accomplishments

    Planar micromachined glass cantilevers utilising integrated Bragg Fabry-Perot cavities

    Here we demonstrate a glass cantilever based on a unique micromachining and etching approach, combined with UV written Bragg gratings. We shall also discuss the increase in sensitivity by using two Bragg gratings to form Fabry-PĆ©rot cavity. Cantilevers are in ultra sensitive force sensors used in applications such as Atomic Force Microscopy, mass sensing and acoustic transducers
